| Explorer Program for Grades 3, 4 & 5
at Alexandria, Hartford, and Homer
Elementary. |
For the
2007-2008 school year we had two types of services available for students.
Students in grades three, four and five who are identified superior cognitive or
identified in three or more academic areas will be served in an all day pull out
class. These classes are held at the high school and the students are with Mrs.
Ziegler-Bopp the entire day. Third and Fourth graders come on Fridays and Fifth
graders come on Mondays.
The second type of service is for students identified in one or two areas. These
students are served at the home base school. Homer is served on Tuesdays,
Alexandria is served on Wednesdays and Hartford is served on Thursdays. The
program goals include:
1. To identify and recognize those children who are gifted.
2. To provide opportunities for interaction with other gifted students in a
risk-free environment.
3. To challenge students to take risks in a non-threatening environment.
4. To enable each identified participant to gain a realistic and healthy concept
of self.
5. To nurture creativity, productivity, and compassion.
6. To develop responsibility for self and society.
The third and fourth grade curriculum themes for the 2007-2008 school year
include deductive reasoning, logical thinking, a geography unit focusing on
Mexico and Guatemala. We will use a variety of resources to meet these goals
including kits, research, different types of media resources and various art
opportunities. We continue to use Dyna Math and a variety of other math
activities to enhance our understanding. We use Reader’s Theatre and Jr. Great
Books to “go in depth” into the various aspects of points of view,
interpretations, and vocabulary development.
The fifth grade curriculum themes for the 2007-2008 school year include
deductive reasoning, logical thinking, critical thinking, a multi-disciplinary
unit on Maya and Belize and we will study the National Park system. We will use
a variety of resources to meet the goals including kits, research skills,
variety of art and media sources and the media center at the middle/ high
school.
Each elementary has a reading group which will have numerous units. Students
will complete poetry, independent and media units. Each elementary has a math
group that will work at and above level to use logical, critical and deductive
thinking skills. Some students also use the Dyna Math. Some schools have a
science and/ or social studies group. The assignments vary for these classes.
Some students work on independent projects while others are working on units
that are grade level extensions. |
