Weather Plan for 2013/2014

Northridge Local Schools

Weather Plan for 2013-14

Dr. Chris M. Briggs, Superintendent of Schools

The decision to close, or delay, the school system is no simple matter. The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority. The expectation is that schools will remain open, if at all possible, for uninterrupted student learning on scheduled school days.

Before a decision is made to close, or delay, our school system due to extreme inclement weather conditions, Northridge Local Schools Superintendent Dr. Chris Briggs consults with our transportation and maintenance supervisors who travel designated bus routes. Our commitment is to keep our community informed of weather-related school closings, delays, or cancellations.

Please note that we continually monitor the weather situation so that we can provide you the most up-to-date information using the Ohio National Weather System.

What information do Northridge Local Schools families need to know?

  • School closures, or delays, will be made no later than 5:30 a.m. that day if possible.
  • Dr. Briggs, or his designee, will make an “All Call” alerting families of the closure, or delay.
  • Dr. Briggs will also use Twitter to provide additional inclement weather updates.
  • Tune into local media outlets (TV and Radio) for information on school closures, or delays.
  • We will also attempt to post all closures and delays on our district website.

What if schools are open but it is snowing heavily during the morning hours?

  • Cancellation announcements of after-school activities, including extracurricular events and field trips will be made by 12:00 p.m. (at the latest).
  • The buildings will be staffed until all students have left for the day.
  • Families will receive an “All Call” for updates on cancellations.

Winter Athletics

  • Decisions to cancel sports games, practices and events will be made by 1:00 p.m.
  • Sporting events that require travel may be cancelled if the superintendent, principal, athletic director, transportation supervisor and business manager determines the weather conditions make travel hazardous for our students.
  • If teams are involved in state tournaments, and the tournaments are not cancelled, Northridge Local Schools will make every attempt to get teams to the event safely using district transportation.
  • The Northridge Local Schools Athletic Director will notify coaches and parents about any schedule changes.

Extreme Cold

  • Outside recess activities are cancelled when temperatures or wind chill dips to zero, or below.
  • Dr. Briggs may decide to close schools for extreme wind chill conditions. The same steps as listed previously will be followed for any delays or cancellations.

Tips

  • Please dress children appropriately for winter weather conditions.
  • If you have any questions, contact your school office for assistance if necessary.
  • If your family needs assistance finding warm winter clothing, please contact your building principal.

It is a great time to be a Viking!
